Keeping My Anger in Check Is Getting Much More Difficult!

I’m in my sixties, and I thought we’d resolved these issues and put them to bed quite some time ago.  But, they’ve reared their ugly heads and they’re hitting us once again, this time with relentless vengeance. Across the country, anti-choice and anti-women activists are seeking to turn women into nothing more than walking, talking incubators for man’s precious little “seed.”

Late last night, the Texas legislature passed an extraordinarily restrictive law that will make it illegal for a woman to receive an abortion after 20 weeks, and may shutter all but five of the 42 women’s heath clinics in the state, merely because they offer abortion services as part of the reproductive health services they provide for a large number of Texas women.  Plus, the impact of this law will be felt by women and families far outside of Texas, because its passage will embolden the forces all around the country who want to roll back the right of a woman to make her own health decisions, one state at a time.

For example, REPUBLIBAN brethren in the North Carolina House also pushed ahead this week to change standards for reproductive health clinics that also offer abortion services that will essentially force their closure.  Their bill was a tweak to the NC-Senate’s bill, which means it will need to return to the NC-Senate for another vote before it can be presented to North Carolina’s Governor for a signature and implementation.  The bill authorizes the state health department to apply standards for ambulatory surgical centers to the clinics.  Only one abortion operator in North Carolina is a licensed ambulatory surgical center. Many of the other 16 clinics in the state won’t be able to comply with the regulations because it will be too costly to upgrade their facilities.  Hey, but the REPUBLIBAN brethren are making it “safer for women.” The most interesting facet of the bill is that the abortion rules were added to a motorcycle safety bill.  Well, I guess there is a slight resemblance?????

Not to be outdone, Wisconsin is jumping into the anti-choice frenzy, but they’re taking it at least two steps further. A Wisconsin lawmaker wants “a word” removed in the Constitution to further his right-wing agenda. Rep. André Jacque (R-DePere) wants to drop the word ‘born’ from this line in the Wisconsin State Constitution, ”All people are born equally free and independent, and have certain inherent rights; among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness…” Then he wants to define right to life in their constitution:, “As applied to the right to life, the terms ‘people’ and ‘person’ shall apply to every human being at any stage of development.” If he’s successful, it would ban ALL abortions as well as in-vitro fertilization, embryonic stem cell research as well as a number of forms of birth control.  So, if you’re of child-bearing age, I hope your affairs are in order, because if you unfortunately find yourself in Wisconsin with a tubal pregnancy, there is NO exception for the medical procedure used to correct that medical problem: an abortion.  Thus, YOU will die.  You’ll be considered nothing more than an expendable loss in the Right’s War on Women’s Rights.

Then there’s Virginia.  First, they sought to impose a requirement that any woman seeking an abortion must submit to being probed by a RepublibanMiscarriageRules“transvaginal ultrasound” wand.  Now keep in mind that I said ANY woman.  So a woman who was first raped by an assailant, and who then found herself to be pregnant (even though Brethren of the REPUBLIBAN seem to think women’s bodies have some miraculous means for preventing that), the state would mandate that she be “raped” once again, this time by the state using a “transvaginal ultrasound” wand. But, it hasn’t stopped there.  Take for example, public remarks recently made by Mark Obenshain, the Virginia REPUBLIBAN’s candidate for Attorney General: “If a woman in Virginia has a miscarriage, without a doctor present, she must report it within 24 hours to the police, or risk going to jail for a full year.”  So, if you have a miscarriage, and if you have to go to jail for a year, would that be for committing a misdemeanor, or a felony?  If it’s a felony, you could also lose your voting rights for life merely because your body was unable to support a pregnancy and spontaneously caused a miscarriage. How is Mr. Obenshain going to know you were pregnant in the first place?  Will he make it a requirement for your doctor to report your pregnancy or any subsequent miscarriage to the state for action against you?  Will pregnant females be required to report their pregnancy to the state within “x” days of learning of the pregnancy, else face penalties?  Will actions such as this force women to forego pre-natal care to assure their privacy?  If he’s elected and you’re of child-bearing age, I suggest that you pick up stakes and move to a more progressive state.

Ohio also slid anti-abortion measures into their state budget.  (I’m sorry but that ploy should be against the law.)  With passage of that budget, women throughout Ohio lost access to low-cost family planning services, access to public hospitals during a health emergency, as well as their right to privacy.  Taking their lead from REPUBLIBAN brethren in Virginia, brethren from the Ohio REPUBLIBAN put a measure in the budget to force ALL woman seeking an abortion to undergo a trans-abdominal ultrasound (note that I said ALL, including rape victims).  They also included a measure in the budget that puts Planned Parenthood last on the distribution list of family-planning dollars, which essentially cuts off $1.4 million in federal funding.  Then there’s the provision restricting rape crisis center from providing counseling sexual assault victims any information about abortion. If they’re found to have done so, they could lose their public funding. But, if all of that isn’t draconian enough for you, they added yet something else.  If a woman is able to arrange for and obtain an abortion in Ohio, and if she develops some sort of medical issue during the procedure, clinics will no longer be allowed to transfer those patients to public hospitals for additional care.  I’m sorry, but that’s tantamount to the State of Ohio saying, “Fuckin’ Die Bitch!”

I’ve been trying to figure out “why” they think they have this authority to legislate such negative and draconian outcomes for women’s reproductive health.  The only thing I can come up with is that the U.S. Constitution is written in the “male” gender and thus, members of the REPUBLIBAN brethren believe that women have NO rights. Men have rights, not women, and it’s their right to decide what we can and cannot do.  If they’re successful in their endeavors, I hope, if you’re a women, you long for a long ago simpler time, like the late 1800s when women literally had no rights, no choice, no vote, and were expected to nothing more than an adornment on a man’s arm in public, but when at home, silent, barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen preparing his dinner.  Women were considered as nothing more than inconsequential property that could be disposed of as simply as the garbage.

That’s where we’re headed ladies.  I hope you’re up for one helluva fight that looming ahead of us on the near horizon.

Debunking More Right-Wing Bulls**t: Liberal Shooters? NOT!

I found this one over on Addicting Info this morning.  Thought you might like to take the time to read this one.  Ms. Steelman did an absolutely wonderful job debunking a viral letter to the editor blaming Democrats for all this rampant gun violence we’ve been experiencing.

— by T. Steelman

Try not to vomit while reading the following collection of ignorance and right wing stupidity:

10104_3760034418778_943078617_n

This “letter to the editor” has been making the rounds since January so I think it’s about time we debunked it. The letter is a hit job that originated with right-wing radio host Roger Hedgecock. The former mayor of San Diego has a radio show and podcast which he uses to spew his ugly messages. This one was picked up by viewers and redirected at local LTE pages nationwide. Let’s have a look, shall we?

The overall assertion is that progressive liberals are anti-gun and anti-second Amendment. Speaking as a progressive liberal gun-owner, um…. no. No we are not. What we are is anti-loophole and pro-sensible gun laws. The piece goes on to ask why we “… acquire guns, then kill movie goers and children in schools.” This charge is unsubstantiated and inflammatory, just like the rest of this piece of garbage. After setting up a nice, big straw man, the list begins…

Ft. Hood Shooter – registered Democrat and Muslim. Okay, that last one is correct, Nidal Hasan was a Muslim. However, he was not a registered Democrat. He lived in 2 states: Virginia and Texas. Neither state requires a partisan registration. Ergo, no registered Democrat here. Move along.

Columbine Shooters – Too young to vote – both families were registered Democrats and progressive liberals. Harris and Klebold were, indeed, too young to vote. They lived in an affluent, conservative suburb of Denver, Littleton. Harris’ father was a retired Air Force pilot and Eric had expressed a desire to join the Marines. Both boys admired Tim McVeigh. So the idea that the boys were liberal is iffy while the claim that they were registered Democrats is demonstrably false.

Virginia Tech shooter – Wrote hate mail to President Bush and his staff, registered Democrat. Bzzzt! Wrong again! Seung-Hui Cho was, first of all, a resident alien and ineligible to vote in the U.S. Even if he could, Virginia is, as mentioned before, a non-partisan registrations state. He was not a registered Democrat. Whether or not he wrote letters, that’s not been shown to have merit.

Colorado theater shooter – registered Democrat, staff worker on the Obama campaign, Occupy Wall Street participant, progressive liberal. This one is completely off-base. It’s based on shoddy research done by someone at (wait for it) Brietbart.com (I’m sure you’re shocked). That guy found A ”James Holmes” but it was not the one who opened fire in a Colorado theater. It is doubtful that the shooter was registered as anything. Some outlets that had taken Breitbart’s word for it (when will they learn?) retracted the allegations. Some, including Breitbart, did not.

Connecticut school shooter – registered Democrat, hated Christians. This one is based on the faulty reasoning that since Connecticut voted for Barack Obama at a 2-1 ratio, Adam Lanza must have been a Democrat. I don’t have to tell those of you who understand logic and statistics how dumb that premise is. In fact, Newtown voted for Romney. Lanza’s mother was a doomsday prepper and a home schooler who was, according to one source, a registered Republican. There is nothing to indicate that he hated Christians. But investigators did find an NRA membership certificate in his name. So we can call this one false as there is nothing to substantiate the claim that Lanza was a registered Democrat.

This is not to say that all mass shooters are Republican. Obviously, neither party sanctions this sort of behavior, at least, their leaders do not. The idea that a crazy person can actually act on behalf of any political party is a step too far. These are ideological crimes, when there is any motive at all – there often is not. That being said, a great many mass killings were committed by far right crazies. If you’ll recall the DHS report  – the one that Fox raised such a stink about – it stated that there had been an uptick in right-wing violence and warned of further incidents from the same quarter. What happened there? Fox likes to play the false equivalence card and, short of reaching back into the 1970s, they were unable to find similar incidents of violence from the left-wing. So they whined and bitched and the new administration knuckled under. That doesn’t change the fact that they were correct.

Below is just a sampling of incidents of right-wing violence. Of course, the biggest attack was the Oklahoma City bombing, a horrible attack driven by political ideology.

  • Eric Rudolph, the Olympic Park bomber, killed one (and one indirectly) and wounded 111 others. His motive for the bombing, according to Rudolph’s own admission, was political.  He also had bombed an abortion clinic in an Atlanta suburb, killing 2 and injuring six. Extremist chatter on the Internet while he was evading capture praised him as “a hero.”
  • In 1993 Michael Frederick Griffin murdered Dr. David Gunn in Pensacola, Florida. He waited outside Gunn’s clinic and shot him three times, yelling, “Don’t kill any more babies.” He is currently serving a term of life in prison.
  • A little more than a year later, Paul Hill shot Dr. Bayard Britton in the head with a 12-gauge shotgun. Hill also killed Britton’s bodyguard, retired Air Force lieutenant James Barrett, 74, and wounded Barrett’s wife June, a retired nurse. Hill bragged that “…  no innocent babies are going to be killed in that clinic today.”
  • Anti-abortion terrorist John Salvi carried out two fatal attacks on two abortion clinics in Brookline, Massachusetts in December 1994. Receptionists Shannon Lowney and Lee Ann Nichols, were killed in the attacks. He escaped but was captured after another clinic attack in which he killed 2 more receptionists on March 19, 1996.
  • Anti-immigrant vigilantes murdered Raul Flores Jr and his 9-year-old daughter Brisenia at point-blank range in their Tucson, Arizona home in 2009. A month earlier another young girl had died in a gun massacre in which anti-immigrant protestors were implicated.
  • In 1998, James Kopp shot and killed Dr. Barnett Slepian. Kopp was affiliated with the militantLambs Of Christ anti-abortion group.
  • Militia wanna-be Bruce Turnidge went apeshit after Barack Obama was elected in 2008. He and his son, Joshua, succumbed to NRA hype and fear. They built and planted a bomb at a bank in Woodburn, Oregon on Dec. 12th, killing 2 police officers and wounding two others.
  • George Richard Tiller, MD was murdered inside his church on May 21, 2009 by Scott Roeder, a militant anti-abortion protestor. Tiller had been shot and wounded 16 years earlier by another anti-abortion militant, Shelley Shannon.

We can see from this sampling that these crimes were driven by ideology, not party. Mostly, it’s anti-abortion militants who seem to think it’s okay to murder people to protect life. Now there’s an oxymoron for you.

As far as the bogus letter to the editor, it is simply not true.

The Overview Effect

Who would have thought traveling to outer space could be such a profound experience? OK, probably everybody, but these former astronauts really articulate it in a way that was just a little mind-blowing.

Share

On the 40th anniversary of the famous ‘Blue Marble’ photograph taken of Earth from space, Planetary Collective presents a short film documenting astronauts’ life-changing stories of seeing the Earth from the outside – a perspective-altering experience often described as the Overview Effect.

The Overview Effect, first described by author Frank White in 1987, is an experience that transforms astronauts’ perspective of the planet and mankind’s place upon it. Common features of the experience are a feeling of awe for the planet, a profound understanding of the interconnection of all life, and a renewed sense of responsibility for taking care of the environment.

‘Overview’ is a short film that explores this phenomenon through interviews with five astronauts who have experienced the Overview Effect. The film also features insights from commentators and thinkers on the wider implications and importance of this understanding for society, and our relationship to the environment.

The Argument for Extending Middle-Class Tax Cuts

Romney’s Duplicity

The saddest part about our election process is that people apply a label to themselves based on whatever reason and then fail to pay attention or do any mental processing relative to that label’s candidates.  Romney would be the WORST thing that could ever happen to the people of our nation.  Early voting in Nevada begins this Saturday … it’s time to let Mr. Romney know that we’ve been paying attention and do NOT like what he has to offer.

Romney’s Way

Crowley Stands Up to Right-Wing Critics

Fact-checking by moderators never happens in debates. EVER. So imagine our surprise when Mitt went so far over the line he actually forced Candy Crowley’s hand.  And … she’s not backing down as right-wing critics are now attacking her.
Crowley refuses to backtrack as Romney surrogate says fact check ‘not your place’ (via Raw Story )

CNN host Candy Crowley on Wednesday stood her ground and refused to backtrack as a surrogate for Republican vice presidential nominee Mitt Romney insisted that she had been “wrong” to fact check the GOP hopeful’s claim that President Barack Obama had not referred to the attacks in Libya as “…

“I Had Binders Full of Women”

Romney: I had ‘binders full of women’ as governor (via Raw Story )

Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney responded to a question about job disparity between men and women in Tuesday’s debate by pointing to his hiring record during his tenure as governor of Massachusetts. As he assembled his cabinet, he said, he observed that all of the early applications…

Is Romney Capable of Real Leadership?

Mitt Romney has vowed to put America on the path to a balanced budget.  Mitt Romney has not only endorsed the Ryan Budget, but he’s signed the Grover Norquist Pedge to oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax in any way.

More specifically, Mitt Romney has promised a Washington lobbyist that he will never, ever:

  • make the wealthiest Americans pay their fair share
  • make huge corporations pay their fair share (or even any taxes at all in some cases)
  • end the unfair tax loopholes that allow millionaires like himself and the billionaires funding his campaign to pay a lower tax rate than middle class Americans
  • end the unfair handouts to hedge fund and private equity managers (like Mitt Romney himself)
  • end tens of billions of dollars in handouts to Big Oil
  • end unfair tax loopholes that pay companies to ship jobs overseas
  • end unfair tax loopholes for vacation homes and yachts
  • end unfair and ridiculous tax loopholes for things like wealthy horse breeders or corporate jets

He’s also said he wants to increase military spending to 4% of GDP … that’s a huge increase, yet he says he wants to cut an entire array of taxes.

UH … how’s he going to do that?  Did Romney flunk his math and accounting classes?  Balance means that you have an equal amount of revenue which then balances out against expenses.  Why does he need to dramatically and explosively increase military spending, plus increase our active-duty force by 100,000 additional military personnel?  Is he that insecure of is foreign policy skills?  Is he planning to turn those troops on American citizens anticipating that we’ll revolt when we learn his true intentions? Or worse, would his first act as President be to declare war on the Iranians … so he can “teach Iranians the meaning of American resolve”?

But his pledges don’t stop there … it goes on …. Let’s see, he’s pledged to

  • extend the Bush Tax cuts in perpetuity,
  • repeal health care reform,
  • repeal financial reform, voucherize Medicare, privatize Social Security,
  • eliminate estate and capital gains taxes (pretty much the only tax many millionaires and billionaires pay),
  • eliminate entire departments like the EPA and Education.

And then just for good measure, he’s also pledged to

  • safeguard America’s 2nd Amendment rights that he believes are somehow under attack by liberals (excuse me?  President Obama signed a bill into law that allows those yahoos to carry guns damn near everywhere, including in our national parks … I wouldn’t be surprised to hear of poaching taking place in those parks any day now),
  • ensure that Planned Parenthood receives absolutely NO federal funding,
  • ensure that not one of those undocumented aliens now living on U.S. soil is granted a path to citizenship,
  • “stand up” for the rights of hunters and sportsmen and vowed not to create burdens for gun owners,
  • sign any bill presented to him that would amend the U.S. Constitution such that marriage is recognized only between a man and a women (thus ensuring institutional government-mandated discrimination against the LGBT community in accordance with NOM directives), and last but not least,
  • he’s vowed to sign a “personhood” amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would not just ban any abortion (including for the health of the mother, rape or incest), but would pretty much outlaw other reproductive health care as well, like contraception and in-vitro fertilization.

So does any of that balance it out?  Hardly.  It makes things drastically worse.  That’s not going to “balance” the budget, but it’s going to make the budget deficit worse as well as our overall debt.  And, it’s going to decimate the social safety net.

Dismantling entire chunks of our government and parting it out to the states and the private sector means enormous increases in unemployment as public sector employment collapses and vaporizes into thin air.  Millions will be without employment, without health care, and without a safe net.  Any moron should understand that that means less revenue to pay for all those pledges.

The states don’t have the funds to pick up those responsibilities Romney claims is slash.  So, they’re either going to go away entirely, or our state tax rates are going to have to rise. But one thing’s for sure, you can most likely bet your last dollar that “your” federal taxes, those $$ withheld from each paycheck earned by 99% … they aren’t going to get cut.  Hey, if the rich and the multinational corporations, the real “looters” in this game the Republiban is playing, aren’t going to be paying into the revenue base, somebody has to pay for transportation infrastructure, all the border guards, the military and all the endless wars they want to declare.

Who is Romney?  Does he even have a core set of principles?  Why would someone who wants to lead this nation need to sign and attest to so many pledges?  Isn’t that something like the tail wagging the dog routine?

Frankly, if it weren’t for all the pledges from this group or that, from this lobbyist or that … I would venture to say we’d know absolutely nothing about the man.  So I ask you … if the Electoral College elects him as our next President, who’s going to lead our country?  Can he stand up and articulate a real vision for America?  Or, are we destined to wait for him to be led by the nose sequentially by one right-wing group after another, who just happen to have a hair up their butt tickling their adam’s apple?

Our Enemies Within: Leaders of the Republiban

PictureNOTE:  I’ve begun referring to Mitt Romney, his Republican brethren and their backers as The Republiban …. the American equivalent to the Taliban … who lead through fear and intimidation, and who promote the pillaging of our Nation’s resources for their own personal financial gain.

By Stephen D. Foster Jr. America has enemies. Not just abroad, but within our shores as well. And our domestic enemies, as it turns out, are MORE dangerous and destructive than the terrorists could ever hope to be. Because while the terrorists want to destroy us, the following people and their organizations are doing far more damage.

Picture-Roger Ailes1. Roger Ailes: The President of Fox News keeps the right-wing mouth piece biased and unbalanced. He literally proposed a right-wing news network as a propaganda tool to use during the Nixon Administration. And now, Fox News makes every effort to slander Democrats, lie to the public, and support conservative groups, activists and politicians at all costs. Want to tell Ailes what you think of him? Feel free to contact Fox News Channel by mail, phone, or email. FOX News Channel 1211 Avenue of the Americas, 2nd Floor New York, NY 10036 Phone: 212-301-3000 Web: www.foxnews.com

Picture2. The Koch Brothers: Yes, there is more than one Koch brother, but rather than jotting down the same paragraph twice, it makes more sense to combine the two. Charles and David Koch are the owners of Koch Industries, a private oil and chemicals company. They have spent big money in elections and have pretty much bought and paid for all of Republicans that sit on the energy committee. They also have ties to The John Birch Society, of which their father was a founding member, and several other conservative think tanks and organizations including, Americans For Prosperity which David Koch leads as chairman, the Heritage Foundation, the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC), and the Cato Institute. They helped create and fund the Tea Party and have been very influential in the watering down of environmental laws and the destruction of unions. If you really want to see the scope of their influence look at what is happening in Wisconsin and in the U.S. House of Representatives. I know you must be dying to contact Koch Industries to give them your opinion, so here’s how you can do that. Koch Industries, Inc. P.O. Picture3. Dick Armey: His FreedomWorks organization helped to create the Tea Party and he has worked closely with the Koch brothers. Armey’s organization seeks to deregulate and tear down reform. He opposed health care reform and is largely responsible for hatred, paranoia and anti-government sentiments displayed at town halls during the health care debate.

Picture4. Tom Donohue: The US Chamber Of Commerce President gained a hell of a lot more power in the wake of the Citizens United ruling. The Chamber is the largest conservative lobbying group in the country. Representing big corporations more than small businesses, the Chamber opposed health care reform and Wall Street reform. The group is in favor of tearing down any and every law designed to protect the American worker. Donohue once stated that “there are legitimate values in outsourcing — not only jobs, but work….” and once told unemployed people in Ohio to “stop whining”. So, not only is he for deregulation, he supports job killing policies. That is a double dose of dangerous.
U.S. Chamber of Commerce 1615 H Street, NW Washington, DC 20062-2000 Main Number: 202-659-6000 Phone: 1-800-638-6582

Picture5. Tony Perkins: Perkins is the President of the Family Research Council, a hate group according to the Southern Poverty Law Center. The Council opposes abortion for any reason, believes homosexuality should be against the law, believes in teaching “intelligent design” in schools, and believes global warming is a hoax. FRC was listed as a hate group after it falsely linked gay males to pedophilia. It basically lobbies the government to make laws that govern our personal and private lives. The Council is a Christian Right-wing organization that has a heavy influence on the Republican Party, hence all the abortion laws being proposed by them.
Family Research Council 801 G Street, NW Washington DC 20001 Phone: 1-800-225-4008

Picture6. Pat Robertson: Robertson founded the Christian Coalition in 1989 and claims to be non-partisan. The problem with this claim is that it’s a bunch of crap. The Christian Coalition passes out “voter guides” in churches and yet is granted tax exempt status. It clearly supports a conservative agenda and is associated with Christian fundamentalism. It is yet another group that believes that America should be a Christian state. They are a threat to the Constitution.
Christian Coalition of America PO Box 37030 Washington, DC 20013-7030 Phone: 202-479-6900

Picture7. Edwin Feulner, Jr.: Feulner is the President of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank that took a leading role in the conservative movement during the 1980′s and continues to push conservative ideals today. The Foundation has strong ties to many Republican politicians, and many Heritage personnel members have gone on to serve in senior governmental roles. Not only does it stand by supply side economics and tax cuts for the rich and corporations which led to the current economic crisis, it also believes in a strong defense which has become more and more expensive. Heritage Foundation is also a part of the Koch Foundation Associate Program and is perhaps the most powerful public policy think tank on this list. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas has taken money from the organization. It has far too much influence on American policy and that influence must be brought to an end.
The Heritage Foundation 214 Massachusetts Ave NE Washington DC 20002-4999 Phone: 202-546-4400

Picture8. Arthur Thompson: Thompson leads the radical right-wing John Birch Society, which is yet another organization that has Koch family connections. Founded in 1958 by Robert Welch, Jr., the John Birch Society is an anti-communism group that has pretty much denounced every liberal person and policy as socialist. It opposes the Civil Rights Act, the United Nations, and believes in immigration reduction. It aims to dismantle the Federal Reserve System and wants to return to the gold standard. The group is a sponsor of CPAC and is no longer exiled from the mainstream. Another interesting fact is that Fred Koch, father of the aforementioned Koch brothers, was a founding member.
John Birch Society 770 N. Westhill Blvd Appleton, Wisconsin 54914 Phone: 920-749-3780

Picture9. Rupert Murdoch: Known as “the man who owns the news”, Murdoch controls a vast media empire around the world including Fox News, The New York Post, and the Wall Street Journal here in America. Advertising his media outlets as “fair and balanced” Murdoch and his News Corporation relentlessly push conservative talking points and provide campaign donations to many Republicans running for various positions. News Corporation now has to answer for hacking cell phones and impeding investigations. Long the mouthpiece for Republican propaganda, Murdoch is a threat to Freedom of the Press and the foundations that keep America free.

Picture10. Grover Norquist: Norquist is an especially dangerous individual. In fact, at the moment, he has the most influence on Republican congressmen. Republicans in the House and Senate refuse to raise taxes on corporations and the wealthy and Norquist and his group, Americans For Tax Reform, have made sure Republicans continue to do so. 235 members of the House and 41 Senators signed the Norquist pledge to not raise taxes and now our economic future hangs in the balance. Norquist is basically calling the shots and holding America hostage on behalf of the rich. And he isn’t even an elected official.

Picture11. David Bossie: Citizens United isn’t just a bad Supreme Court ruling. Citizens United is the conservative organization that the conservative majority of the Supreme Court ruled in favor of in 2008. Founded in 1988, located near Capitol Hill, and led by President and Chairman David Bossie, Citizens United’s goals include withdrawal from the United Nations, and defeat of campaign finance laws, among others. They also produce “documentaries” that serve the conservative agenda. The group is mostly a threat because of their fight to allow corporate ownership of elections. The Koch brothers, and many conservative think tanks and organizations have flooded elections with cash since the ruling. The Supreme Court decision alone is enough to put this dangerous organization and Bossie on the list.

Picture12. Tim LaHaye and Kenneth Cribb: Once again, you’ll notice that two people occupy this spot. After some thought, I decided this was necessary to avoid repetition.Tim Lahaye founded, and Kenneth Cribb is the current President of, the Council for National Policy. The CNP is a conservative organization for social conservative activists. Described by The New York Times as a “little-known group of a few hundred of the most powerful conservatives in the country,” the organization is perhaps the most powerful group on this list. Members include many who are already on this list such asJames DobsonPat RobertsonTony PerkinsPhyllis Schlafly, and Edwin Feulner Jr. What makes this group particularly dangerous is that they support theocracy and Dominionism as national policy. They are also incredibly secretive and that’s scary all by itself.
CNP is apparently so secret that no address or phone number is available, so you’ll have to email them. info@cfnp.org Website: http://www.cfnp.org/

Picture13. Steven J. Law:Lawis President and CEO of American Crossroads, a conservative organization that has raised and spent tens of millions of dollars to defend and elect Republican candidates to federal office, and was very active in the 2010 U.S. midterm elections. Basically, Law and his group are listed because they have taken advantage of the Citizens United Supreme Court decision the most since the ruling. The Kochs and Karl Rove have connections with the group and are a major reason why the House is under GOP control.

Picture14. James Dobson:Dobson is the Family Talk radio personality and Family Research Council founder that contributes greatly to all the hate we see from conservatives. A frequent guest on Fox News, he is perhaps the most influential religious leader on the Christian-Right even though he has never been ordained. Dobson believes that women should only focus on mothering (and probably cooking too) and is totally against gay rights. He supports private schools and special tax privileges for religious schools. He opposes sex education and only supports abstinence as the only technique for pregnancy prevention. Dobson is on this list because he is the one that began all of the anti-gay, anti-women, and anti-education speeches that are now commonplace in the Republican Party. [Note from The Christian Left: This is the saddest entry for us.  Some of us used to really enjoy James Dobson.  It's unfortunate that he joined the extreme right. Maybe he'll see the light some day.]

Picture15. Phyllis Schlafly: She is the only woman on this list. Undoubtedly, you may have thought that Michele Bachmann or Sarah Palin would be, but they are not. I consider Palin and Bachmann mere pawns compared to Schlafly. As founder and President of the Eagle Forum, Schlafly opposes feminism and equal rights for women. Eagle Forum promotes a pro-life, anti-gay, anti-sex education, and anti-vaccination agenda that has contributed to the current wave of social conservative extremism in the Republican Party. She believes women should remain in the home and that there is no such things as marital rape. She is certainly the most influential woman in right-wing activism and as such, the most dangerous one too.

Picture16. David Keene: Up to now David Keene led the American Conservative Union, which is the oldest operating conservative lobbying organization in the country. The ACU runs the event known as CPAC and spends money on lobbying and political campaigns. Keene is still the current President of the National Rifle Association. Which is also a strong lobbying group that is virtually an arm of the Republican Party that glorifies guns and believes that people should be able to carry guns anywhere they go, even near the President of the United States. Keene is mostly on this list because of the NRA. The NRA used to actually serve a valid purpose but has since become a pro-Republican political organization that has mixed guns and politics. It makes them a danger to the political process.

Picture17. Tim Wildmon: Classified as a hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center, the American Family Association is headed by Tim Wildmon. AFA is just like every other conservative Christian group. It opposes abortion and gay rights, as well as other public policy goals such as deregulation of the oil industry and lobbying against theEmployee Free Choice Act. The group has actively boycotted just about any business that disagrees with them. In the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings, the AFA released a video in which “God” tells a student that students were killed in schools because God isn’t allowed in schools anymore and blamed the shootings on abortion and lack of prayer in schools. AFA is against all other religions and has an obsession with Christmas, often boycotting companies that do not mention Christmas in their advertising. AFA is here on this list because they represent one of the biggest threats to intellectual and personal freedom in America.

Picture18. David Barton: Despite not having any history or law credentials David Barton passes himself off as an expert in early American history. Most of his claims have been disputed and written off as false by real historians. Barton’s organization is Wallbuilders, which seeks to destroy one the basic foundations of American life: the separation of church and state. Barton’s mission is to revise history in an effort to turn America into a Christian state with Biblical law instituted as the law of the land. He has also created false quotes to justify his claims. Barton is a danger to the history of America, the Constitution, and education.

Picture19. Noble Ellington: American Legislative Exchange Council, also known as ALEC. The Council is basically a pay to play organization that carries the corporate agenda into state legislatures across the country. They work to end unions, end environmental and labor regulations, and end consumer protection laws. ALEC has been funded by the Koch brothers for two decades. The price for corporate participation is an ALEC membership fee of as much as $25,000. For that price, corporations are basically writing the legislation that you are currently seeing being proposed and implemented in Republican controlled states across the country.

Picture20. Edward H. Crane: Crane is the founder and current leader of the Cato Institute. While they have supported some liberal policies and claim to abhor neo-conservatives, the Cato Institute does push many objectives that should make everyone cringe. Among the various policies that Cato supports, privatizing Social Security, abolishing the minimum wage, abolishing affirmative action, and some environmental regulations, are among them. Of course, it’s understandable why Cato holds these positions considering Charles Koch is chairman of the board and a major funding source. Even Rupert Murdoch had a place on the board at one point which connects the Kochs and the right-wing media.

And there you have it. All of these people and their organizations pose a serious threat to the American people. They target women, senior citizens, minorities, homosexuals, non-Christians, and American workers. So which person or organization is the most dangerous to democracy? The common thread throughout the list is the Koch brothers. They have ties to many of the people and organizations on the list and share many of the same goals. If one were to remove the Koch brothers from the equation an important source of funding and leadership would be eliminated from the conservative sphere. The Koch brothers are by far the biggest threat to American values and institutions. The truly evil thing about this group is that NONE of them are elected by the people. Yet they have more power and influence over our elected officials and system of law and government, than we do. Edited By: Alexis Atherton
