Have you been trying to do something, but you don’t have the right software … and you don’t have the money to buy that commercial piece of software that will let you do it?  Well, there’s probably an open-source or freeware application that will help you do what you need or want to do without having to shell out some serious bucks.   Here’s few links and information about a number of very good software programs, most of which are absolutely FREE.

SECURITY PROGRAMS

NOTE:  I do not recommend placing AVG Anti-virus on any PC for two reasons:  (1) I’ve had to repair too many of my neighbors PCs that were seriously infested with vermin while AVG was actively installed and up-to-date on their systems, and (2) they actively promote that they will sell their customer identity information to others for a price.

  • Windows Defender — Windows Defender is installed and active on PCs beginning with Windows 8.  It’s a free program that helps you stay productive by protecting your computer against pop-ups, slow performance and security threats caused by spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Free if you’re using a genuine copy of MS Windows operating systems,  Win 2000is no longer supported.  And if you’ve installed Microsoft Security Essentials, it’s incorporated as part of that product, so there’s no need to install this one. [Freeware]
  • Malwarebytes’ Anti-Malware — If your PC should get infected by something really ugly, this program can be quite useful in helping to eradicate the pest. The free version is run on-demand by the PC user … but if you want it to run on it’s own, providing real-time protection, or scheduled scanning and updating operations, there’s a one-time fee of $24.95. When I’m troubleshooting and repairing a neighbor’s PCs to removed varmints that have plagued their registries, I automatically install this and recommend that they invest in buying it so it will actively run in the background to prevent accidental infection from websites with viruses hidden in their content.
  • Malware Removal Tool — This tool is already installed on your PC and it’s updated monthly by Microsoft via Microsoft Update.  If you believe your PC might be infected with something ugly, hold down the windows key while typing an R.  That will bring up the ‘Run’ window.  Type MRT in the text field and then press the enter key.  The Malware Removal Tool window will open.  Click ‘next’ on the entry screen.  On the next screen, select the type of scan you’d like to run and then click next.  Warning:  An MRT scan takes a long while to run and if you have quite a bit of data on your PC, it take hours and hours to complete.  I suggest you start one of these scans just prior to turning into bed for the night and it should be complete by morning when you wake.
  • Roboform — Make your life easier with this top-rated password manager that comes in three varieties, one that’s installed on your PC, one that syncs between your PC/tablet/laptop/cellphone and the cloud, or one that’s installed on a removable drive. In addition to saving just passwords, it allows you to save “safe notes,” generate complex passwords for each and every account (while only needing just one password to access the entire lot), and safe personal/credit form information needed to fill out web forms.  You set up your password that serves a key to encrypt all your saved login passwords.  Warning:  Don’t lose or forget your Roboform password, because SiberSystems does not keep a copy on file and cannot reset your password. Available for a nominal cost annually.
  • Keepass — KeePass Professional is a free, open source password manager, which helps you to manage your passwords in a secure way. You can put all your passwords in one database, which is locked with one master key or a key file. So you only have to remember one single master password or select the key file to unlock the whole database. The databases are encrypted using the best and most secure encryption algorithms currently known.

Save a copy of the report as .mht file [an htm file with all of it’s resources included (graphics, etc.) as part of the file] so you have an spotlight archive file of what was installed on your PC at that moment in time.
